Frequently Asked Question(s)

0. How do I apply to (any) CCNSB programmes ? Where can I find details about (any) CCNSB programme ?

All admissions for various CCNSB programmes are through Post Graduate Entrance Examination 2009 portal.
Details about the duration, eligibility requirements about each programme are available: for Bioinformatics, go here and for Computaional Natural Sciences, go here.
1. I have done BIT/BIS/MCA. Am I eligible to apply for any PG program in Computational Natural Sciences/Bioinformatics?
In case your Bachelor degree is in an area equivalent to BE/BTech in Computer Science, as long as it is officially recognized, you are eligible.
2. The advertisement mentions M Sc Sciences as one of the eligibility criteria. Which branches of science does it include?

Apart from the pure sciences, M Sc students from hybrid areas such as Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics etc are actually encouraged to apply. The applicants should however have the minimum background in mathematics to clear the Mathematics section in the general paper I in order to qualify for the interview.

3. I have a very good background in biological sciences and want to do research in bioinformatics. However, I do not have the background to clear the Maths subject paper and there are no options related to my domain for paper 2 in PGEE 2007. Is there any other way for me to obtain an admission to the PG program in Bioinformatics?

The MS by research and the PhD program in Bioinformatics can also admit exceptional students with strong domain knowledge and research interests in bio related areas. The student should however have some programming background and adequate quantitative skills required for clearing the core IT related courses.

Admission to these programs is possible at any time of the year. In order to avail oneself of this procedure, one has to send in a formal application along with CV and a brief description of the area of proposed thesis work. The Academic committee will inform the candidate (only) if it finds the application suitable for the program and accordingly set the date for interview and written examination (if necessary).

4. What are the options for financial support for the PG programs?

Teaching and research assistantships are available at the institute for students of the research programs. It may not be available to students of the M Tech programs. We expect to provide full support to students of the research programs during their research work.

5. What is the difference between M Tech and MS by Research programs in Bioinformatics?
Students admitted to the MS by research program will be required to do a major bioinformatics related thesis project, involving the application of IT in their domain, in addition to the required course work. Their course may extend beyond two years. In the M Tech program, the emphasis will be on course work. Apart from the core courses, students will have the option to select from a choice of projects and advanced electives.

6. I have opted for MS/PhD program. Can I be considered for M.Tech..?

Applicants for MS program can opt for M.Tech program (available only in bioinformatics and not in computational natural sciences) at the time of interview.
7. Are the GRE and TOEFL score taken into consideration for the MS (by research ) program also?

Not as a screening criterion. However, at the time of interview, any additional qualification will be considered and may be helpful in getting admission.
Post BSc. Admissions FAQs  (Post BSc Dual Degree & MSc in CNS programmes)

8. What is the difference between Post BSc Dual Degree program and MSc in CNS program ?

Post BSc Dual Degree programm is designed to be four-year program, upon completion of which the student will be awarded two degrees: a BTech in CSE and a MS in CNS. This Post BSc Dual Degree program is designed to be a "professional" course.

MSc in Computational Natural Sciences is designed to be a two-year program, upon completion of which the student will be awarded a MSc in CNS (additionally specialisation in a feild, namely chemistry, physics etc, may be specified on the degree). This MSc program is desigend to be a "academic/reserach" course.

9. What is the pattern for entrance examination?

You will have two papers: A General Aptitude paper and a CNSB paper both with objective type questions and of 2 hr duration each.

10. I am in final year of my course and our final results are not yet declared. What shall I fill for my percentage in graduation in the registration form?

You can fill Percentage or CGPA as calculated on the basis of marks/grades you have obtained till time time of application.

11.
I am not a Chemistry/Physics honors student. I am currently pursuing my honors degree in other subjects. Am I eligible to apply for this Post BSc program?

Normally only students who are pursuing a B Sc degree program with honors/major in either Physics/Chemistry are eligible to apply. See also the answer to Q. 14 below.
12. Where are the examination centers?

Any of the PGEE 2009 examination centers can be chosen by the candidates.

13.
Our B Sc program does not have 'honours/major' option. We have to study three subjects of which one of the subjects is physics/chemistry. Am I eligible to apply?

Normally B Sc Honors/Major in Physics/Chemistry is a requirement. See also the answer to Q. 14.

14. I have BSc degree with Physics/Chemistry as major subject. But we don't have Honors degree. Am I elgible for the programme.

Yes. You are eligible provided you also have mathematics as one of the subjects.

15.
I am completing B Sc with Physics/Chemistry as the major subject but I don't have mathematics as a subject. Am I eligible to apply?

Normally No. A Bachelor's degree in Physics/Chemistry with Mathematics at the graduate level is essential. Exceptional cases are considered only if the candidate has strong background otherwise and can justify competence in mathematics to the satisfaction of the admission committee.
